Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, "We've gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict." By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they're building their children's confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents' praise has put them.

When I was mostly in middle school and high school I was tormented because I was ugly. It still happens from time to time. But it was much worse in middle school and first year of high school. All of this has put me into depression. I do not like most boys and they don’t like me because I am not pretty enough and treat me like crap because of it. I get very anxious to be in public a lot and in school as I still have groups of mean girls staring me down and boys too. I have enough of feelings like an alien, I replay these horrible memories over and hate it, I hate I was born with this face, why couldn’t everyone be born equally beautiful? How can I get over this pain and not be so anxious? I think I am hideous, especially the sides of my face.

Not looking beautiful, a girl is always scorned or even insulted by others, which makes her upset and at a loss for what to do with her life.

An elephant was constantly disturbed by a restless fly, who asked the elephant about the secret of remaining calm. The elephant revealed that calmness would be obtained when one's senses and attention were focused.

After reading the story, I was inspired by what the elephant said. The ability to focus one's attention is the key to success in doing anything.

This reminds me of what happened when I entered high school as a Senior One student. I was so excited to find that there were various student organizations and afterclass activities intended for us students. The researchers recommend that educators should take measures to help students counter Chinese cultural aphasia.
